Upcycling
The result:
Canadians use over 200,000 tonnes of coffee & over 250,000 tonnes of barley every year. Much of this waste ends up in landfills, creating tonnes of waste & greenhouse gas emissions. Upcycling not only prevents that, it also encourages us to give ingredients a second chance. After being used for coffee or in the brewing process, our grounds & grains still have so much to give. That’s where upcycling comes in.
Upcycling is taking something that is considered waste & re-purposing it. As opposed to recycling, in upcycling, those materials are used to create a product of higher quality or value, not lower. Upcycling is a big part of the Circular Economy — a system designed to extend the life cycle of products & ingredients, & contribute to environmental sustainability.
Think of it this way: coffee beans are destined for more than a solitary cup of joe, in the same way that the best barley should be allowed to benefit more than just the contents of your pint glass. Both have so much more to offer when they aren’t just reduced to their most recognizable output.
FAQs & Tips
FAQs & Tips
Gluten-Free Coffee Flour
+ Does this flour taste like coffee?
Nope! If you’re looking for a caffeine hit, or the taste of a rich espresso, you should head to the coffee machine. This flour looks dark, but has a nutty, chocolate taste.
+ How do I use it?
It’s a great addition to baking, adding both flavour & nutritional value. Try it in things like cinnamon rolls, banana bread, sourdough, cookies, granola bars, gluten-free pasta & pizza. We recommend using 20-25% coffee flour in place of all purpose flour or other gluten-free flours.
+ How do you turn coffee grounds into flour?
We pick up the grounds from cafes, saving them from the landfill. Then we dehydrate them to make them shelf stable. Once they are dry, we extract the valuable coffee oil using a top secret cleantech process. Then we take the remaining grounds & mill them to just the right consistency.
+ What’s so super about it?
We’re glad you asked! Our coffee flour has 2x the protein of rice flour & more protein per gram than whole wheat flour. It even has more potassium per gram than a banana.
100% Brewer's Barley Saved-Grain Flour
+ Does this flour taste like beer?
Nope! We left the beer taste for the delicious craft beverages that the grain first gave itself to. Our flour adds richness and nutrition, with a slight roasty flavour. It’s just like your average all-purpose, only better.
+ What’s so super about it?
Where do we start? Our 100% Brewer’s Barley Saved-Grain Flour has 3.4x more fibre than wheat flour & only ⅓ the carbs. It also has 20 g of protein per 100 g - that’s 25% more protein than quinoa. That’s pretty super in our books.
+ How do I use it?
This flour is a great addition to baking, adding both flavour & nutritional value. We recommend it in things like cinnamon rolls, banana bread, sourdough, cookies, granola bars, pasta, & pizza.
+ How do you turn saved grain into flour?
We pick up what is called ‘spent grain’ from breweries after they’ve finished using it in the brewing process. They would normally pay to have this taken away & it would be sent to a landfill, or downcycled as animal feed. We dehydrate the grain to make it shelf stable, then mill it to just the right consistency.

Coffee Oil
+ How do you get the oil?
We take saved coffee grounds & dehydrate them to make them shelf-stable. Then we use cleantech processes to extract the oil & package it on-site in our Okotoks facility.
+ What’s so great about the oil?
This oil really is something special. It’s great for your skin to improve fine lines & wrinkles, firming, skin tone, and acne. It is packed with Vitamin E & fatty acids, & has potent antioxidant properties that actively work to reduce oxidative stress on the skin, leading to increased blood flow & oxygen delivery to cells. The caffeine left in the oil is also known to stimulate hair cell growth in both men and women.
+ So what do I do with it?
Where do we start! This is powerful stuff, so if you have sensitive skin we recommend adding it to a carrier oil to dilute the concentrated essential oil, avoiding adverse side effects. Just add 2-3 drops to your mositurizer or carrier oil and massage evenly over your face and neck for a natural skin care regimen. You can even add it to your shampoo/conditioner or use as a pre-wash hair mask for 10-20 mins to strengthen your hair.
